What symptoms should I look out for?

There are several symptoms that may indicate you need to test for HPB diseases such as liver, pancreatic and gallbladder disease. However, some serious liver conditions may have no symptoms and so are only identified through abnormal liver function blood test results or abnormal scans, so it is important to get assessed.

✔ Jaundice

✔ Abdominal pain, discomfort or tenderness

✔ Nausea and vomiting

✔ Pale coloured stools

✔ Dark coloured urine

✔ Itchy skin

✔ Chronic fatigue

✔ Unexplained weight loss and loss of appetite

  • Gallstones

    Need to know

Sometimes gallstones (small stones of cholesterol) develop in the gallbladder or nearby bile duct. The gallbladder is a pear-shaped organ beneath your liver. It stores bile, which helps your body digest fat. When this happens, most people have no symptoms but it can lead to biliary colic or other symptoms...

  • Bile duct cancer

    Need to know

Bile helps to break down and digest fat. It's made in the liver, stored in the gallbladder and carried around the body by bile ducts. Though rare, bile duct cancer can be aggressive. It accounts for 10-15% of all primary liver cancers and affects both men and women. At HCA Healthcare UK, we offer a variety...

  • Acute liver disease

    Need to know

Acute liver disease occurs when onset is sudden and symptoms can be severe but last for a short period. When the liver stops functioning properly, this can — in rare instances —lead to liver failure. Examples of acute liver disease include acute viral hepatitis, acute alcohol-related liver disease...

  • Alcohol related liver disease

    Need to know

Prolonged alcohol misuse can reduce the liver's ability to regenerate. ALD refers to liver damage caused by excess alcohol intake. It has three stages: 1. Alcoholic fatty liver disease. A build-up of fats in the liver. 2. Alcoholic hepatitis. Inflammation of the liver. 3. Cirrhosis. Accumulated scar...

  • Autoimmune hepatitis

    Need to know

Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is an uncommon but serious chronic condition where your body's immune system attacks the liver cells, causing inflammation of the liver. If left untreated, it can lead to fibrosis, cirrhosis and, eventually, liver failure and liver cancer. If you are concerned you may have...

  • Cirrhosis

    Need to know

Cirrhosis is the result of long-term, continuous damage to the liver and may have many different causes. The damage leads to scarring known as fibrosis. Irregular bumps (nodules) replace the smooth liver tissue and the liver becomes harder. Together, the scarring and nodules are called cirrhosis. ...

  • Liver fibrosis

    Need to know

Fibrosis is the formation of an abnormally large amount of scar tissue in the liver. It occurs when the liver tries to repair and replace damaged cells. The build-up of scar tissue can interfere with the flow of blood to the liver and stop it from functioning properly. Over time cirrhosis develops, which...

  • Non alcoholic fatty liver disease

    Need to know

Fatty liver is a condition where you have too much fat in your liver. There should be little or no fat in a healthy liver. Fatty liver that isn't caused by alcohol is called non-alcohol related fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which can lead to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and, at advanced stages...

  • Pancreatic tumours

    Need to know

The pancreas produces digestive juices and hormones. Tumours that form on the pancreas can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Tumours start in different parts of the pancreas. Understanding the type of cell the tumour started in and exactly where in the pancreas, will help your consultant...

  • Pancreatitis

    Need to know

The pancreas is a small organ located behind the stomach that helps with your digestion. Most people with acute pancreatitis feel better without treatment within a week, with no further problems. However, some people with severe acute pancreatitis or chronic pancreatitis — where the inflammation...

Leading the way in liver care

The liver is the largest solid organ in the human body. It plays a vital role, executing numerous life-sustaining functions, from breaking down and converting food into energy to fighting infections and removing waste from the blood system. The liver is unique as it can remodel and regenerate itself if damaged or injured.

Given its vital functions it is essential to recognise and treat liver disease in a timely way. Unfortunately, liver disease is still one of the top five causes of premature death in England and liver cancer is the fastest growing cause of cancer mortality across the world. With our network of pioneering consultant liver surgeons and other HPB specialists, we are perfectly positioned to respond to this very real healthcare challenge.

HCA UK consultants offer patients with a range of HPB conditions sector-leading expertise, technologies and facilities for faster diagnosis, responsive treatment and holistic care.
